A Florida man was arrested for allegedly leaving three young children alone, stranded on an island during a camping trip over Memorial Day weekend.
The Satellite Beach Police Department said they received a 911 call from Leonard Nile, 51, who told them that he lost contact with three children who were supposed to be in his care.
He told officers that they were camping on Samsons Island Nature Park when he and his companion, Kayla Campbell, left the kids, ages 9, 10, and 11, alone while they went to get more camping supplies.
The officer noted that both Nile and Campbell were intoxicated and found it difficult to get a coherent statement from either of them.
The children were located by a Good Samaritan, who heard them screaming for help and brought them to safety. The children were alone on the island, without food or supplies, for about four hours before they were rescued.
Nile, who admitted to doing cocaine and smoking marijuana, was taken into custody on charges of child neglect.
