Jupiter's police chief is addressing the safety concerns of those riding electronic bikes in traffic.

A week after the death of a 12-year-old boy, Chief Michael Barbera told community members during a town hall last night that his officers are focusing on enforcing state laws regarding those e-bikes.

"If you’re stopped for any sort of violation, that we would start with a warning," chief Barbera explained. "From there, the warning goes into a system and if you’re stopped a second time, you’re going to get a citation. A citation, before you’re 16, will actually push back getting your driver’s license."

CBS 12 News reports that e-bikes are currently permitted wherever traditional bicycles are allowed, but riders must adhere to traffic rules like stopping at stop signs.

Some residents want laws beefed up to make it safer.
