With whipping, shifting winds and low humidity continuing, firefighters are upping their efforts to attack a more than 26,000-acre brushfire in South Miami-Dade that's only 30% contained.
Florida Forest Service's Ludie Bond says, "We brought in a second tanker to drop retardant. We have three helicopters, two tankers, and then we brough in some additional firefighters and some engines from north and northcentral Florida."
She is asking, with so many people on spring break heading to and from the Keys, and with three days of NASCAR racing underway at Homestead-Miami Speedway, please be very cautious with any and all outdoor activities.
"Human activities a major contributor to these fires. Discarded cigarette butts, unattended campfires, illegal burning activities, and even motor vehicles parked or driven on dry, grassy areas can actually start fires quickly," says Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Erika Benitez.
This fire is believed to have possibly been started by at ATV or UTV.
You don't even have to be in dry, grassy areas, because only takes a spark to start a fire that includes from outdoor equipment like grills, lawnmowers and power tools.
