FLORIDA - A new traffic law in Florida is about to bring serious consequences for drivers who push the limits on speed, especially those going far beyond the posted limit.
Beginning July 1st, anyone caught driving more than 50 miles per hour over the speed limit in Florida will face stricter penalties under a new law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis.
According to reports, first-time violators could be fined $500 and spend up to 30 days in jail.
Repeat offenders face even more severe punishment, including a $1,000 fine, up to 90 days behind bars, and a mandatory six-month license suspension.
Unlike most speeding tickets, this offense will now require a mandatory court appearance.
Drivers will no longer be able to simply pay a fine and move on.
The legislation also gives officers discretion to apply extra fines for anyone caught speeding by 30 or more miles per hour, although those penalties are not automatic.
The law has received support from residents and safety analysts who believe it will help reduce fatalities.
National data from AAA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows tens of thousands of people die on U.S. roads each year, with speed being a leading factor.
Officials say the timing of the law is intentional, coming just before the busy Fourth of July travel period, when Florida highways see a major surge in traffic.
