St. Lucie County, FL - A deadly crash on Florida’s Turnpike in St. Lucie County on August 12th resulted in the deaths of three people and the arrest of a semi-truck driver.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles confirmed that 33-year-old Harjinger Singh was taken into custody following the collision.
According to investigators, Singh was allegedly driving recklessly and without regard for the safety of others at the time of the crash.
Florida Highway Patrol reports indicate that Singh attempted an illegal U-turn near mile marker 170, causing a Chrysler minivan to collide with the side of his commercial semi-truck.
Two passengers in the minivan, a 37-year-old woman from Pompano Beach and a 54-year-old man from Miami, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The vehicle’s 30-year-old driver from Florida City was airlifted to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Singh faces three counts of vehicular homicide, according to an arrest warrant issued by Florida State Troopers.
During the investigation, authorities, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, discovered that Singh had allegedly been living in the United States illegally since 2018.
Records indicate he crossed the Mexico border and later obtained a commercial driver’s license in California.
FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner confirmed Singh is in custody on state vehicular homicide charges and immigration violations.
Authorities stated that further investigation is ongoing to determine if additional charges will be filed.
