FLORIDA - Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has issued a subpoena to the online gaming platform Roblox, requesting detailed information about how the company sets age-verification requirements, moderates chat features, and markets its services to children.
The subpoena also seeks documents regarding Roblox’s collection and handling of data from users under 18.
The move comes amid reports that minors on the platform have been exposed to harmful content due to predatory adults allegedly messaging children.
In 2024, Roblox reported more than 85 million daily active users, with roughly 40 percent estimated to be under age 13.
Ryan Gorman and Dana McKay cover this story and more on The Ryan Gorman Show:
The platform hosts millions of games and interactive environments created both by Roblox and by users.
The subpoena specifically requests records showing time spent on the platform by users aged 16 and younger, marketing materials aimed at young users, steps Roblox takes to prevent exposure to mature content, communications from Florida users reporting abuse, and documents related to any criminal prosecutions allegedly arising from interactions on the platform.
Roblox responded by denying the Attorney General’s claims, stating that the platform prohibits sharing images and videos in chat, uses automated and human monitoring to detect harmful content, and has filters to prevent the exchange of personal information.
The company also noted it is implementing age estimation for chat users and said it collaborates with law enforcement to remove bad actors and protect minors.
This subpoena is part of ongoing investigations and legal actions aimed at evaluating Roblox’s child safety policies and ensuring that minors are protected while using the platform.
