Oakland, CA - Former NFL running back Doug Martin died on Saturday, after being detained by Oakland police following an alleged residential break-in.
Officers responded around 4:15 a.m. to a report of a burglary in the Chabot Park neighborhood.
Martin was reportedly inside the home when police arrived and was taken into custody after a brief struggle.
He became unresponsive shortly after being detained and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at the age of 36.

Authorities have not confirmed any connection between Martin and the residence where the incident occurred.
The cause of death remains under investigation.
The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy.
Investigations are being conducted by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section, Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, and the Community Police Review Agency.
Martin, an Oakland native, played seven seasons in the NFL.
He spent six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2012 to 2017, earning two Pro Bowl selections and being named first-team All-Pro in 2015 after rushing for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns.
He completed his professional career with the Oakland Raiders in 2018.
Over his career, he recorded more than 5,300 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns.
Martin’s family has confirmed his death but stated the official cause has not been determined.
Authorities have released limited details regarding the events leading up to the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
