Miami Dade Sheriff's Deputy Shot & Killed in Kendall area

KENDALL, FL — A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy was fatally shot Friday afternoon during a violent encounter that unfolded while responding to a traffic crash in the Kendall District, authorities confirmed.

Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, had been dispatched to the scene of a reported collision near the 12200 block of Southwest 128th Street. According to Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, the situation escalated when Jaramillo was attacked and shot during an altercation with an individual involved in the incident. The suspect then turned the weapon on themselves and died at the scene. A second person is currently being questioned by investigators.

Emergency calls from bystanders prompted a swift response from fellow deputies, who administered first aid to Jaramillo. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.

“What happened to our deputy was not okay,” said Sheriff Cordero-Stutz during a press briefing. “We are hurting. He gave the ultimate sacrifice—his life defending this community.”

Jaramillo had recently graduated from the police academy in May 2024 and was described by the sheriff as a dedicated public servant, a beloved son, and a loyal friend. Prior to joining the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, he served nearly four years with the Coral Gables Police Department. Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak praised Jaramillo’s service, stating, “His dedication, courage, and commitment to our community will never be forgotten.”

The tragedy prompted an outpouring of support from law enforcement agencies across South Florida. Hundreds of first responders gathered outside the hospital to honor Jaramillo, with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue raising an American flag in tribute. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava expressed her condolences on social media, writing, “Our entire community stands with this brave officer, his family, and fellow deputies.”

Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones, whose department recently lost an officer in a separate incident, echoed the sentiment: “Regardless of the color of our uniforms, there are no jurisdictional boundaries when one of our own has fallen. We all mourn together.”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is assisting in the ongoing investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have not yet released further details about the individuals involved.

As the community grieves, Sheriff Cordero-Stutz reaffirmed the department’s commitment to public safety. “The next few days will be very difficult for us,” she said. “But we will continue to protect and serve.”
