Colorado officials, including Governor Jared Polis, have expressed strong opposition to the relocation, citing concerns over taxpayer expenses and the impact on military families. Governor Polis called the decision a "waste of taxpayer dollars" and an "inconvenience to military families" who would need to relocate.

The debate over the permanent location for SPACECOM's headquarters has been ongoing since its reestablishment by President Trump in 2018. Initially set up in Colorado Springs as a temporary measure, the US Air Force recommended Huntsville in 2021 as the most cost-effective option. However, a Government Accountability Office report later criticized the decision-making process for lacking transparency.

In 2023, President Joe Biden attempted to make the Colorado Springs location permanent, following advice from Gen. James Dickinson, who warned that moving to Alabama could affect military readiness. Despite this, Trump has decided to proceed with the move, supported by Alabama officials who have long advocated for the relocation.

The relocation process is expected to take three to four years to establish a temporary headquarters in Alabama. The move has sparked political debate, with Colorado officials, including Senator Michael Bennet, vowing to fight the decision.
